Rena's information on hearing and vision loss. The following website is dedicated to giving an overview of reasons, treatments, and helpful resources for people affected by and parents of children with hearing or vision loss. http://www.strengthforcaring.com/conditions/vision-and-hearing-loss/overview/

www.helpkidshear.org
Help Kids Hear is a site for parents of children with hearing loss. It was created by the mother and father of two hearing impaired children. They share their story and want everyone who visits the site to participate and visit their discussion forums and share your story in hopes that it will help others, or perhaps write an article to be published on the site. It seems like a simple little site at first glance but when you look at the site map it contains a wealth of information. It has a section for news related items, articles and commentaries. Resources to general questions about hearing loss, assistive devices, educational strategies, financial support, and sign language are just a few of the things available. The facts and figures page offers statistics and facts related to hearing loss. The "For the Kids" section is my personal favorite. It has links to websites for games, activities and other fun stuff for kids. This site asks users to help them stay informed of any other resources that cater to children who are deaf or hearing impaired. This information submitted by Tammy Guthery.

Many parents are very skeptical about giving their child the childhood vaccinations that are recommeded for children due to the large number of children that have disabilities after taking the shots. This website offers information about Support Groups, Individual Vaccines stories, Articles, Scientific Studies, Emotional Responses and other information that someone might be seeking before giving their child the vaccines. This is the website for The American Academy of Pediatrics. The home page has general information about hearing and vision loss. From the main page other resources are easily assessable. There are Family and Community Resources, Professional Resources, General Resources, And Kids Resources. This would be a good website to have for general information on hearing and vision loss in children.

Because much of the sensory information that is vital to children's development comes through the senses of vision and hearing it is very important to find these failures early. During the first three years of a child's life major neural networks are being formed in the brain. Much of this development comes from distance senses, i.e., vision and hearing, which allows us to know about things and people in the world even when we are not in physical contact with them. This site stresses the importance of early intervention and provides infomation for your child if you suspect that they may have hearing or vision loss.

This is a great site for parents. This site discusses the importance of detecting vision problems early in children. It provides information on developmental vision milestones and a checklist for parents. Did you know a child could pass a 20/20 vision test and still have vision problems?
